I don't normally go out on Sunday mornings. I get ready for church, walk out to the garage, open the door, get in the van and drive away. So I didn't know what I had been missing all these years we have lived here. This morning I had a couple extra minutes so I went out back to check the bird feeders and bird bath. That is when I heard something that has probably been happening every Sunday morning for over 140 years! The church bell in town! There are five churches in this little farming town. The catholic church may also have a bell tower but where the sound was coming from had to be the Methodist church. At the time I heard it there was no other sound but birds and an occasional dog bark. I imagined that was how it was 100 years ago. Such a sweet sound wrapping the little community in peace. I stood and listened for a minute or two. Much the way I do when a flock of Canadian Geese fly by. Listening to their calling back and forth and imagining myself in a time that I never lived in but long for.
I did a little research on the history of this church. It wasn't specific but either the cornerstone was laid or the building finished on January 1, 1871. The first church built in Jefferson, it housed a congregation that had been meeting in the home of a resident until they outgrew it. Other than a wing being added in the 1950's it has had little change. The pews are original and came from the same mill that the wood for the structure came from, owned my church member Absalom Smith. The church cost the whopping sum of $1004.66!

This picture was taken in 1911. The house across the street from it is still standing and gorgeous! Just this side of the church is a building that used to be the old stage coach/bus stop. It has been restaurants since we have lived here. Going through several owners.
Amazing what you can find on the internet! This is an inside shot of the church with the original pews. Up from looks like there might be a few more original or very old pieces. I have heard this is the most beautiful place during the holidays.
I just had to share this little bit of history and my Sunday morning story. It did something toward making today just a little more special than otherwise I think.
And now for a Liamism:
He got mad at me and daddy yesterday. "Fine then, I am going to go upstairs to my room by myself" and off he marches up the stairs and we hear his door close. Way to make us pay Liam! Party time!!
