On Friday we got out and started putting the garden to bed for the winter. The above picture is what I harvested as we pulled plants out. I did the cabbage after this picture was taken. All those acorn squash were volunteers. and that pumpkin looking thing....I am assuming it is a cross with an acorn squash. I have no idea. We will have to see if it is edible. Tonight I cut open one of the little cantaloupe for our dinner and it was really good! It was a rough year for them. So my grand total in poundage this year will be over 540!!! I have not gotten in all the dry beans so not sure how high that number could go! I am very excited......163 of those pounds were those ridiculous little tomatoes that I thought would prove to be a complete dud but somehow managed to redeem themselves.
I just think these are the most beautiful beans! After I have put Liam to bed I will sit with them and watch my DVR'd Judge Judy's and empty the beans out of their pods. Is that what you call them? hmmm....very relaxing...hard on the back but relaxing none the less. I have still on the vines in the greenhouse and then a lot still in the garden. Next dry day I will hopefully get them in. And I learned from this year a couple things. My dad had always sworn by a June 1st planting date. After the last three springs Annette and I decided that that was wise counsel so we tried to hold off until then. We failed miserably but I now know that June 1st is too late for these types of beans and for sunflowers. So I will keep that in mind for next spring. The plan is to cover the beds so I can easily go out and get them ready without having to wait for Craig and the tiller. We will see how that goes.
So there is the update. You almost didn't get it! Weebly decided to do an update on the site and totally confused me. Fortunately David was online at the time and was able to set things up for me and show me how to navigate this new and *cough, cough* improved site.
Oh...and dinner tonight? Fried potatoes from my garden and eggs from my sisters chickens. Super yummy!
Have a great evening all!
